Diagram 3. Fire-Resistance Rating Requirements for Exterior Walls Based on Fire Separation Distance

This diagram illustrates the direct relation between fire-resistance rating requirements for exterior walls and fire separation distance. If your occupancy type is R1 with construction type IA and the fire separation distance (from the exterior wall to a lot line or imaginary line) is between 10 to 30 feet, then the exterior wall is required to have at least 1-hour rating.
